Because the request of reading news of Freshman English, I take a look at the headline of BBC, NCC, and New Your Times. Before, I seldom read English news for I always think that I still didn’t have the ability to understand the whole story. But now, I start to believe that I, just like other, can also do it. It’s really difficult for me to feel that I can’t match up on other classmates; especially some of them are joining clubs, activities, and also have boyfriend. Furthermore, after having the dinner with my adviser, I heard many gossip that about half of my classmates have a good connection. Thus, they can go abroad whenever they want to. They are under a better surrounding because their parents are also the teachers, the professors, even the chief. They can learn English from their parents, and also guide by, ask question to their parents.
Some of their parents are the boss of a company, or the soldiers, who can afford their children’s tuition or even hire a tutor for them. I know it’s unfair for classmates because maybe some of them are also learn English on their own, or they make a lot of efforts on learning. And now it’s just the time of fruitfulness. I do not complain about my family, my parents, or my backgrounds, either. But I am disappointed. I hate that what I can do is to attribute all the great language skills of my classmates to their backgrounds. I hate that what I feel after hearing such things is only to sigh, but not urge myself that I need to work hard. I hate, hate, hate the god damn differences between the same age, same birth place Taiwan, and the same education.
Let me review, ten reading notes, two facilitate group presentation, and the project from Freshman English, two responses and two papers from Introduction to Western Literature. There are also one presentation from Rhetoric and oral training class respectively, two movies and three to four homework from Introduction to Linguistic. After hundreds of thousands of searches, googles, discussions, and preparations, do I make the progress? I don’t know. How terrible it is, to feel that I don’t know whether I make the progress or not? Sadness, frustration, depression, is not to mention. But what’s harder to afford is that my mood is just like a curve, arising when I thought that I am progressing then falling down when I know the scores I got, know the truth is that I am still far from others.
But what worse it can be? People won’t stay at the depression all the time, of course I need to brace up and perk up. So after reading three pieces of news, I decide to believe that I can do others can eventually. Maybe reading news is just the beginning, but at last it makes me want to continue my work, my job, my enthusiastic about what I loved, English. And finally, I can gain what I dream for, maybe also just like what they dream for a long time ago.

As a Hakka
Just as what I said in the last article, I am a Hakka. The truth is that, I am proud of being a Hakka. My parents are both Hakka so I was grow up in the atmosphere of Hakka’s food, the language, and the custom. These things are all my familiar things so I am eager wanting to let everyone know that Hakka cultural is beautiful and the language is also charming. My mom and my dad are all Hakka and both my grandparents home are in Meeinoog. Meeinoog is the place I know mostly besides my hometown, Kaohsiung. In recent years the most famous tourist spot is of course the huge amount of flower seas.
The flower is big with many different colors, and the height can to reach our waist. Furthermore, there are many bees flying around the flower, which means that the bees would around you when you taking the picture with the flowers! The best time to see the flower seas is in Chinese New Year, and actually there are no certain spot or place, which means that you can just drive the car in the street and you will find that there are a lot of people and cars parking at the side of the road. Then there would be sheets of flowers.
As for my favorite cuisine , it is certainly the Rice Flat Noodles. Even in Kaohsiung or Tainan I eat them very often. But, I still think that both Tainan and Kaohsiung can’t compare with Meinong’s rice flat Noodles. I don’t know the reasons maybe the way they cooked or the relish are different. Relish means that when a cuisine is ready you need to put some And I recommend you a street called “Rice Flat Noodles Street” in Meinong. It is not the name of the street; however, because there are more than twenty stores selling Rice Flat Noodles there, it got the name.
Rise is Hakka people’s staple food. They eat rice three meals a day. In addition to plain rice, they use rice to make all kinds of snacks. There are rice snacks that are available only on Chinese New Year, festivals, wedding, and funerals such as Hong Ban or Gui Ban. We add sesame, peanuts, red beans as stuffing. It’s really tasty. Even now I just type it on the computer, I’m almost slobbering.
As a Hakka, I am proud that I like being a member of this race. As the time passed, in my generation, more and more people losing the identity or even don’t care about who they are, where they belong to. But I still remain this important principle in my mind, knowing that I can’t forget that I am a Hakka or that how to speak Hakka. So now I am learning Hakka from my parents. I would also teach my friends and my roommate how to pronounce it. At the same time I learn Southern Min form them. Is it interesting? As a English major, I really hope that I can learn many new languages but also keep my own languages!

The discrimination minority
In the later Freshman English, I think we mainly focus on the discrimination minority. Like the two essays “Taiwan’s dark village sees the light” and “The Ritual of Birth.” They are both talk about the story of one of 13 official aboriginal groups in Taiwan. The first one is a piece of news, talking about the installation of electricity in the Dark Village. The Dark Village is an aboriginal settlement belongs to Amis tribe.
It’s very dark – without light and electricity and the new policy cause a debate between the young and old. I’m surprised when reading that it is the elderly people who want the electricity. Before reading the news, I thought that the young people are eager to high-tech products. But the stereotype is the opposite in this “Dark Village.” Probably I’ll never realize the feeling of living in the dark because I am born with light, but I’m still worry about the disappearance of their community spirit. People would not sit outside and share things after finishing their dinner because of the televisions and computers. They would not touch by the soft cool breeze in the night because they have air-conditioners. Then the simple village becomes the complicated, cold, but handy city.
And the other, The Ritual of Birth is about a series of rituals hold for Vava, a new-born baby in Bunun. The story was written in children’s perspective, making us more understand the meaning or the origin of some rituals. But after reading the whole story, I was stunned by the character, midwife. Because Bunun is patriarchy, women may not have as much power as men. But the midwife is as same as the elder men, also be respected by the people in the village, even grandpa need to honor her strong power. Suddenly, I feel a sense of proud being woman, even though our most important mission is seem only to give birth to a new life. I, of course, would feel unfair when the story mention some limits for women. But undeniable, to give birth to a new baby is an irreplaceable job for a women. I believe men also understand how important we are, that’s why the midwife is so respectable.
As in the first article, should electricity install to the village? In my opinion, the perfect solution is yes, but with the circumstance that we people don’t lose the original spirit of helping others and gathering together. And always remember that the natural resources are the most wonderful and irreplaceable power. But what I want to concern more is that all of us should really pay more attention to the cultural of these discrimination minorities. Otherwise, the unique, special cultural will disappear fast, just like I also want to keep Hakka cultural forever. Because I am a Hakka, I know the feeling of belonging to a light discrimination minority, well, at least not the majority. I believe no matter what aspect which other people want to access, all we want is that they can also help us to keep the interesting, meaningful, and non-replaceable cultural forever.

Another New Question
Just like what I am mention in the previous journal, I am interested in anorexia. I wonder that why people in this world will suffer from a disease which is not want to eat anything. Sometimes I even think that it is a reckless waste of grain, because so many people in the world want to eat but there is no enough food for them. Both types of people die eventually, but sarcastically, one is because of anorexia and one is starvation. And now, because of the project of Freshman English, our group has the chance to understand anorexia. We focus on the children anorexia, that is children aged before twelve. I am in charge of the news. So I found much news, being surprised that children anorexia is a totally important issue.
For example, the first news I found is titled anorexia begins at five. The case is from Eating Disorders Foundation in Australian and New Zealand on 2006. Among their patients, the youngest was a five-year-old boy. The child had been teased in preschool and was about to start kindergarten. So he believe that if he went to school he could not be fat because he would be teased worse, that’s unbelievable. The second one is happens in Taiwan. The news is from China Post on 2006 but the case is in Taiwan. A ten-year-old girl, that is only fifth grades in elementary school, is engaged in a weight-reducing competition with her classmates. Actually the girl does not look fat before she began to go on a diet. But, because of peer pressure, she ate less and less. Finally she got anorexia.
And we should even pay more attention on the causes of children anorexia. The news told us that we should not ignore children anorexia anymore because the youngest anorexic in Taiwan is 7 years old, according another news on 2009. Among the first two pieces of news, there is a same reason – peer pressure – which leads to the children anorexia. Why peer pressures also have the strong power to make an innocent child suffer from anorexia. I begin trying to recall that before I entering junior high school, the most influence people should be my parents and teachers. So the causes from family and media are reasonable. But why are peers? Why peers are so important that it can influence children refusing to eat?
In our presentation, our group is going to tell everyone what peer pressure is, why it is so important, and how to defeat peer pressure. But then I come up with another question – what causes peer pressure become so influence that it can make children suffered from anorexia? I mean, in my generation, or in any generation, peer pressure is everywhere. But it is not until recently that peer pressure can cause eating disorders. Is that because our value changes which indirectly cause the value of children, or because we do not care our parents as much as before? Anyway, there are always unsolvable questions in the reality.

Party
This Thursday is our last party, and the final comes soon after that. I’ve always nervous when I needed to go on the stage and perform some show, even if there is also someone else besides me. What’s more, the party and the composition final exam are at the same day, which made me running out of time to prepare for the party’s show. Our group is going to perform a talk show, and I am the host. But I didn’t even have the time to memorize the line until yesterday! Nevertheless, our rehearsal was full of fun! We six people laughed during the rehearsal, and finally I decide to just let it be and improvise.
At first, the atmosphere is a little bit not so high because the first group performed a magic show. But their shows are full of flaws and holes. Later we went to change our costume, and it’s our time to show! I was sitting on the chair, introducing myself at first “Hello everyone, this is Nicky’s talk show. Today we also continue the series of program – celebrity’s marriage. We invite a happy couple to share their romance. Let’s welcome Bangelina – Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie” Then April and Lisa danced to the front. When I chatted with them, Jennifer Aniston rushed to the stage and shouted with abuse toward Angelina, that is Andrea! Just like what you though, the two women were fighting with each other for Brad Pitt.
At the same time, Brad Pitt called his best friend, a half of a thousand, Five Hundred, for help. After Five Hundred (that is Kate) and Brad Pitt separate the two crazy women, I said “Calm down everyone. Since you are both charming and attractive, why not just take some small test and so we can find out who’s the winner for Brad Pitt? Actually, our producer just comes up with some game for you.” And then I invite the numerologist Vivian (Arwen) to be the umpire. And the first game is – boxing. It’s really excited, isn’t it? The first winner is Angelina. But what I like most is the second game, which is to ask questions and see who know Brad Pitt most! The first question is – who is Brad Pitt’s favorite star? We design that the answer should be “of course, me!” Ha it’s really fun!
Finally is the last game, which is to test their body flexible. Angelina was fifty centimeter while Jennifer was only five! So it is obvious that Angelina and Brad made a perfect couple. Ha’ ha it’s all our performance. Is it cool and funny? At the end of the party, Nicole brought in a big, big Teddy bear as a gift to Christina. And we took picture together, of course with the Teddy bear. Christina encouraged us to practice continuously, and somehow I felt a little sad… Our happy oral training class is end, and no longer will have. I really like Christina, but besides oral training class, she is not as humor as in oral class! All of a sudden I thought I lose a perfect professor. But think on the other side, how lucky I am to have a perfect professor at the fresh year of a college life?

The Trip to Taichung
This weekend I went to Taichung to meet my boyfriend just like what I did in last semester. But this time we went to a special place, National Museum of Natural Science, where I learned a lot from this trip. Besides the museum, we also went to the Feng Chia Night Market and Yichung Street. The food that impressed me most in the night market was powder intestine. It’s really tasty but costly. Although I’ve been there for three times, I didn’t satisfied with going there for I still thought that I didn’t eat all of the yummy foods. I was tired with waiting in the line and, unfortunately, all the famous foods had a long line! So I’ll stop going there until I have enough patience waiting for it.
In addition to the delicious food, I had a shocking experience in Taichung. It was at ten o’clock on Friday when my boyfriend and I wanted to go home. We walked to the parking lot in Feng Chia University, preparing to ride on our scooter, and I, wanted to show my skill in riding a scooter, volunteering to ride it. My boyfriend encouraged me to do so, instructing me how to ride the scooter. At first, I thought “it’s okay!” “I am just riding to the gate of the university and it’s safe in the campus.” But then I’ve already ridden to the gate, outside of the gate, and right in the night market! Oh my! I was so nervous that I kept yelling my boyfriend’s name and shivered my legs! It was very embarrassed but I still consider that the best way to train your riding skill is to ride in the night market like me or, ride in the most famous streets in front of NCKU campus.
Then on the Saturday morning we went to the most amusing place – National Museum of Natural Science. Not to mention, we saw many exhibition about human’s body in The Journey of Human Life, the Mini Zoo, and Agriculture Ecology. In addition, we also went to the Herb Garden and the Chinese Science and Technology, seeing many great implements in Ancient China. But the most impressing one is still The Age of Dinosaurs in The Life Science Hall. Although the specimens of dinosaurs are not true, they are vivid. Well, at last they successfully scare some little children who would cry when their parents asked them to take some pictures with the dinosaurs. I felt that I was bad because I smiled in my mind when I saw that scene.

Finally I want to commend that five hours are absolutely not enough for looking around the Museum. We missed a lot of wonderful places and still can’t finish all the halls. Besides, you need to have a great physical strength; otherwise you’ll feel your strength does not match your ambitions. We’ve already decides that next time we are going to the 3-D Theater and watch some films. This summer we’ll also go to the museum in our hometown, Kaohsiung. I can’t wait for that. Oh by the way, I love this kind of dating because we would not only improve our relationship through dating but also learn together.

The immigrants
Few weeks ago I read a short story about the immigrants. The story described how a couple was treated partial by the government of America when they wanted to bring their two years old child to there. The parents though it would be easy to move to America so that the couple could live together with their baby. However, the policy actually didn’t take care of the immigrants and respect their rights. The parents both had a certificate but at that time they didn’t have their baby. Only because there’s no certificate to prove that they had a child after they had their own papers, the customs officers took away their child. Then it’s a series of delays and irresponsibility. At first, the government claimed that “tomorrow” they can have the paper to let the parents bring back their son. But finally, the parents saw their child after ten months!!
The most shock plot is at the final sentence. When the mother went to the nursery school to bring back her child, he said “go away, go away!” and bade his mom. How could those things happened to a mother who loved her child so much? How could the government regard such things – to take away a child from his or her beloved parents – as nothing big deal? If the government were really sympathized the mother and treated all human beings impartial, I believe the mother would not lose her child for totally ten months! There’s no wrong with the rule which it can not let a person enter a country without the proof, even though the person is just a child. But the policy did have some problems of its effectiveness and corruptions, leading to the heart-breaking ending.
This also made me think about the brides from South China, Thai, and Vietnam. Do we treat them well or didn’t ignore their rights? The answer is absolutely no! We can still see some immigrants without the identification or the welfares just like us. It’s also an unfair thing for them and an incompleteness of our country’s laws! But no much of us are really concern or care about their rights, their feelings, and their life! How many of them are suffering from the no identification, no jobs, or even no their own children besides them? I feel a great sorrow for the mother in the essay only by thinking about the isolation of her and her son, and the refusal gave by her son.
There is always unfairness in this world. No matter to the female, children, or the immigrants, there must still a lot of problems hiding some where or even in public. But if the governments don’t make any improvements, hundreds of thousands of people would still suffer from the inhuman policy. Now what we should do is that no longer think this kind of thing is others business for some day we may also have the same problem. Let’s fight for their rights, the laws, and our life by offering your cares.

We decide to present the issue of “Anorexia” in the final project of Freshman English. I have been interested in such issue for a long time since I read an article about anorexia. That was talked about a girl who has anorexia because she wanted her father can notice her. She believed that only by becoming thin would her father pay more attention to her. Then she started exercise, didn’t eat anything but a glass of grapes, and vomited, just like typical patients of anorexia would do. I started to wonder that what causes them to hate their body and believe that they can still alive without eating anything. Or which kind of force could compel them to put their love food to the ground?
Probably because I have no problem in my figure, I can’t understand the desire of becoming thinness of a fat or full figure person. But what’s surprising me is that a lot of anorexic are already slender! Maybe because of their occupation such as models, they needed to be thinner and thinner (that’s also another serious issue about several models who got anorexia died last few years) or other reasons. I simply curious about why they regard this concept as nothing big deal, even think that it’s normal. I particularly love the essay wrote by those who really got anorexia talking about how they look at their action, their body’s different, and their feelings of this disease. At this time, research papers are useless because they always talking about the solutions instead of the feeling of the patients.
However, this time we focus on the children anorexic, which is more surprising in society. We found a piece of news in Taiwan and one in other country. The former is about the youngest patient of anorexia only ages seven, the first grade in elementary school, the most innocent age in our whole life! The latter is about a five-years-old boy getting anorexia because he believes that he would be teased if he is fat. I believe that most of us have a wonderful childhood, didn’t have to worry about the figure, the grade, and the relationship between our friend and us. The most influential people are our parents, and even if we have friends, the topics around us should always be the play – where we can have fun, when we should meet each other, and what we can play.
Now every thing – the value and the attitude toward shape, health, and the most important one, life – are all different from our childhood. How come these innocent children have to face these trivial problems? How can we help them to go back to their naïve world? I don’t know the answer for I myself could not understand the strong request of being thinness. I agree that we all need a lot of things to feel alive, family, love, and friends. But I also trust that we all need one thing – to actually be alive. If we lose our life in order to pursue some not-really-need dreams, all of them become not exist.

Helping others
The next topic of my oral training class is about helping others. Christina wanted us to imagine that we are driving on the road while a person who needs helps is waves his or her hand. Would you stop and help that person? My answer is that if “his” car is broken, I’ll call the car factory and find someone else to help him. But if he wants me to drive him to other place, it’s impossible. But after Christina’s experience sharing, I became to doubt that whether helping others is true or false. Or when I myself may incur some problems, should I really give up helping the one who needs me?
Christina said that one time she drove in United States and met a man had some problems with his car. Christina wanted to help and she didn’t even have to get off her car but her friend refused it. Her friend only said “You never know.” I was shocked actually because her friend is right. You never know whether he is a good person or not. But in such a cold weather and he needed to wait for a long time until next car will pass by, how can we just abandon him? I hate, of course, those who take advantage of other people who trying to help them. It is them that make others dare not to help someone they are not familiar with or something that may bring them some troubles.
But how about those really need our helps? For example, if you see a child was kidnapped, can you just pretend that you didn’t see anything happened or simply think that it’s not your business but other’s? Because you might get hurt and even die if you trying to help the child, rescue the man who was drown, or save the cat which almost collided by a high speed car, you choose to stand, watch, and go away silently. Human beings are selfish. They didn’t want to lose anything – such as money or their precious time – by helping others, but once they need help or their close friends and family need help, they blame humankind are bastards. They called those watcher are cold-blooded, but they didn’t notice that they did the same thing before, probably hated by someone else, too.
Even though there are so many unfair things in the world, such as our charity might not be rewarded, I still believe that human beings are born with love. We love and are loved by others. We feel sad when others have difficulties although we didn’t know one another. And I believe that’s the reason why so many people will donate money to help the poor children or some severe injured people even if they are not rich at all. Those people who receive helps must help others in their own ways, too. We should really cherish the time we are able to help others, and don’t feel sorry when we need other’s help. Because only when you realize the feeling of receive helps, you know what’s the true meaning of helping others.

Is money important?
Recently I read a piece of news which is about a female ex-legislator now is come down to live by picking up the garbage in Taiwan. It’s ironic that one person who used to have both money and fame now also lose both of them. At the end of the news, another legislator said, the more clean-handed you are the worse situation you will be. Being shocked by what the legislator said, I can’t help but think about the issue we discussed in the oral training class – the importance of money. My professor, Cristina, let us listened to the story in the tap before the discussion.
The story is talk about a professional athlete who should choose to stay in the original football team or to go to the new team far away from his hometown. Now being the best athlete in his original team, he has a very good relationship with his coach and teammates. Compared to the ordinary people in his country, he is already wealthy. But the new team in England served him much more money. The discussion began; I have two partners and only one of them thought that as a “professional” athlete, he should go to the new team. But the reason is not the superficial money but the good chance to challenge and meliorate his ability. When professor asked us to vote, going to the new team is also the minority.
If I were him, I would not leave my family and country to the new place where I am totally not familiar with. There is no guarantee that I can success in there and can also keep my family. Probably I prefer the stable life to the adventure. But then Cristina reminded us that the professional athlete’s life is short, actually. So do you change your mind? Yeah, this really shook my decision. What would life become without money? Shouldn’t I earn money as much as I can?? Does it seem like what the legislator said previously? As a short-life-worker, if you don’t seize the chance to make a fortune, you would never have that again. But, there’s also no guarantee that I can have a better life after I retire if I earn a lot of money now. So is money really so important?
At the end of the class, we see a poem about what money can buy. I quote some of the sentences. “It can buy you a house, but not a home; it can buy you a clock, but not time; it can buy you a book, but not knowledge; it can but you sex, but not love.” I believe money can help a lot but also can destroy us once we misuse it. Still, I can’t forgive those “overtake” public servant. You do how many things and take how much money, although your job’s life is short or whether you may suffer from broke later. I hope I would never become those who never satisfy with money or being unhappy because of money. Then I can stay in my wonderful country, live my own life, and cherish what I have now.

Our earth
Last weekend I read an article called “A Faustian Pact” which is actually talked about the climate change in the Earth. But what’s make this article unique is that the author used the story of Faust to be a metaphor of this serious issue. This is my first time to access Faust’s story. Faust is a brilliant doctor, who strikes a bargain with the devil. The devil gave him twenty-four years to live in all voluptuousness, and Faust will surrender his soul to hell at the end of that period. But in this article, the Faust is humankind – restless, curious, and unsatisfied. The devil is fossil fuel. Faust’s miraculous abilities are the activities fossil fuel permits. We live in the environment which is full of senses and luxurious, but later we need to pay for it.
The article provided some examples which I never thought about it. Now people would no longer just die because of the rising sea level, but because of the disease, water shortages, and droughts etc. The rising temperatures could give rise to many other problems. The diseases would spread easier than before because of the temperatures. The increasing temperature would cause the decrease of mountain melt waters and the decline of the waters from the leaves. Not only the human beings but also other species and the oceans would suffer a lot. For example, the water could be too acid for shells to form, and this would be devastating to sea life.
I believe that we all know that the environment is severe and need to be protected, but the truth is that most of us would not really put our thoughts into practice. We wrinkled our brows every time we heard the news about the greenhouse effect. We then told to our friends and ourselves that: oh, how terrible! We need to shelter our earth! But next moment we took the elevator, drove our own car, and turn on the air conditioner. To say is one thing, to do is another thing. Some people even thought that the situation is not worst enough. They are still waiting and watching. After all, they are already die when the destruction of the earth. Protect our earth? Come on, it’s not their business! Just leave the worry to the offspring and they’ll have solutions!
Actually my classmates talked about this issue in our oral training class. Only the minority are willing to give up all the factors such as handiness and protect our environment. Handiness is an important consideration. We don’t want to walk so we take the elevator instead of climbing the stairs, drive cars or scooters instead of waiting for buses. In addition, privacy is also a top priority consideration. We don’t want to take the public transportations or the car pool because we want our privacy. I, myself is the same. I’ll be mad at my boyfriend if he can’t ride the scooter when we’re going out. But now I want to have some change after seeing a movie named An Inconvenient Truth. Recently I’ll climb the stairs in the main library and our department building. Instead of feeling upset, I’ll think I am helping the earth and at the same time, saving my life. It can be an exercise, too. And what’s more, it sometimes saves more time because I don’t have to waste my time to wait for the elevator. I really hope I can keep this good habit for a long time.

The Spring Break
This is my first spring break which I can expect that it will be overwhelmed by the following mid-term exams and all the delay homework. But this is the seldom opportunity dating with the old friends and, of course, dating with my boyfriend. In this semester, we can only meet once two weeks or even a month. How should I arrange my time becomes the most difficult and important thing for me undoubtedly. First, I listed all the things I need to finish and ranked them according to their importance. However, I also want to be luxuriating – sleeping in my cozy bed regardless of the endless paper, eating the delicious foods regardless of the weights, and reading as many as I can regardless of the not yet finished textbooks – sometimes.
Wednesday I went to my older sister’s school with her. On one hand I wanted to study outside my home so I can really concentrate on my school work. On the other hand, I wanted to borrow books from their main library. The journey is long, taking forty minutes from my home to the school, which is located in Bingdong, by the scooter. Studying hard in the whole morning, after lunch I began to explore the treasures – books – form one bookcase to another. It is the marvelous books that I even forgot the time – I picked them for almost two hours!! And not until when I went back to my seat did I realize that I chose more than twenty books that I wanted to read. Now my home had piled so many books waiting for me.
Friday I went to SOGO Department Store with my boyfriend. Although Tainan and Taichung are not very far, for us, it is also a long-distance relationship. The true emotions can’t completely convey to each other through MSN or cell phone. The best way to maintain a relationship is still meet face to face. After browsing at the bookstore and chatting, we knew more about “love” and the doubt in my mind were solved. Moreover, we came across an activity which is called – happy bell. You can write down your wishes and knock the bell only by contributing a receipt. I wished that those I love and love me can be happy and health for good.
Of course, besides these important things I must finish other essential things, that is, study for school works. That’s really cruel but a reality. But I somehow didn’t worry about it very much and believed that I can handle all the things well. Now all I want is pass all the exams and bury myself in the pile of books again. I know life is limited and there’re still a lot of things I haven’t fulfill, but only by reading can I reach some worlds which I won’t get in forever. Furthermore, only when I go to bookstores or libraries can I understand that the books that I read were nothing big deal. If I continue to waste my time, then I’ll lose so many perfect books and so much precious time getting along with my loved one. So, speed up, Nicky!

know more about myself...
I think this whole week I were quite different form the normal “I.” I lost something, something important, essential, and soulful. Thus everything became boring and dull, or I should say, I became not interested in everything. Lack of enthusiasm really isolates me from the brisk life around me. All my source of happiness, laugh, and hope seemed gone away. Why? Well, it seems that the reason was so much that I can contribute my “cold” to everything. It sounds ironically, right? Everything that I was not interested in became the reasons why I was not interested in them!
Last Monday I had a little quarrel with my boyfriend. That was a terrible day; maybe just like I said in my last journal, I had so many thing or presentation to do in the whole week. Besides, everything actually was out of my control. I hate, hate that suddenly something popped out and broke my routine! I am a routine person and I don’t want to pursue any surprise in my life. Ok, last Monday was so “surprisingly” that I really didn’t feel well. Keeping that in my mind, I told my boyfriend that night. However what I got was not comfort or sympathy, but blame. (Well, in that time I thought it was blame.) Now everything seems all right, but I know that still something wrong in my mind…
“You didn’t have enough strength to resist the pressure.” That’s what he said to me. And finally I found that I was not as strong as I thought. I always regard myself as a resolute and strong girl. But that was denied by the one who closed to me. This semester, I was denied by so many people, and now the value I build for myself broken. How can I live without my self-value? What I want, what I pursue, and what I am became the endless question strike in my mind, and the worst is that I don’t know the answer… Professor Chiang once said that “you win some, and you will lose some.” I don’t have to be the one who stand in front of sixty-eight students, three TA plus professor Kai-lin to debate. I win the chance which won’t lose my face in public, don’t need to prepare the heavy information, and wouldn’t feel scare to face the classmate whom I thought the best students in FLLD 101. But I lose the chance to compete with them, too. I lose the chance which I can make a big progress through this debate and also lose the unique experience which sixty-four people won’t get.
It sounds so contradictory, right? Yea, I am always a self-contradiction person. I can’t make a decision each time I need to. Nor can I figure out my answer toward the dilemma. There’s no absolutely “yes” or “no” in my dictionary. Complaining, not knowing what to do, losing the chance again and again and then regret is the only things in my dictionary. Now I have neither self-conceit nor self-deceit, what do I have?

nicky's presentation week
I decided that if Monday’s General Education course is coincident my turn to have a presentation, I’ll call this week “Nicky’s presentation week.” I have reasons, of course to name this week. Monday’s Freshman English is our group’s turn to do the presentation, but besides the normal presentation, we surprisingly know that our group will have a small debate with group five. That’s really shock all of us. We have the less time than other groups but still need to make a good content power point and presentation, and also have to prepare a debate! That’s the most difficult paper I meet since I enter NCKU…
First of all, I already thought that our topic is not well developed compared with other groups’. The first group is talked about anorexia, how wonderful topic!! I love this kind of topic so much because I really interested in anorexia. I borrowed so many books about anorexia for this disease is really mysterious. The patients are also human beings, they are normal just like us. But what kinds of thoughts make them want to go diet, even not to eat anything? Then the second and third topic is talked about “hero” and “police office.” My brother is a police officer works in Taipei now, and hero is a topic which we can well-developed. What’s more, one of my favorite English songs is named “Hero,” so I really like these topics so much…
But our topic is women athletes. God, I never have interest in sports! I seldom exercise thus I actually don’t understand the sports rules or the famous athletes, not to mentioned now we need to explore deep into the mental of athletes. Everyday we have to discuss the questions about three or four hours. And until last Friday, I lost in the finger-guessing game, which means that I am the one who need to debate in public…Oh, how poor I am. This is totally a chance for me to lose face, embarrassed and stammer in front of everyone! Although I once joined the debate club in my senior high school, I still can’t act and think very quickly when I have debate with someone. Now I have six minutes to debate with someone and the most difficult part is in English! I am sure that God is punishing me because I show an arrogant attitude in recently discussion and think that I am the effective person in my group. Now God want me to feel sorry about my attitude.
Ok, I’ll be fine eventually. To lose face actually is not a big deal and sarcastically, I am not very familiar with other classmates. Also my boyfriend didn’t sit there and I’m no interested in any boy in my class. So I don’t have to worry about there’s anyone will remember my fault or tease me or even look down on me. I believe that if the situation change and it’s they that stand on the stage they’ll have the bad perform just like me. Come on, after this time, I’ll have a perfect performance in the future and this experience must be a special one.

the perfect banquet
Last Saturday I went to my cousin’s wedding banquet with my mom and some of my relatives. We rented a bus because the wedding is in a small town of Chunghwa, and set out from Kaohsiung at nine o’clock. I’m always looking forward to eat the foods in the banquet for they are quite different from those foods we ate in our daily life. Not to mention it was my cousin’s wedding banquet, we guys were usually become very crazy because we get alone with each other well. Especially that means we’ll have a new member in our family. I waked up early that day to dress up, eat a little breakfast, and then went to take the bus with my mom.
However, the trip didn’t go as easy as what I expected. At first, I thought that Chunghwa was near, so we won’t need to spend too much time to arrive at the destination. I bring nothing but one textbook and one Business Weekly and my MP3. Unexpectedly, only one of my other cousins went to this banquet, the rest were all aunts, uncles, and my grandpa and grandma. That means I, who is still a university student, would not have anyone to chat or talk or play with!! Suddenly it seemed that the trip had lost a half of fun I expected. Without my cousins, I just slept, waked up, slept, and waked up, the excitement became boredom. And the time on the bus became longer, too.
Fortunately, we arrived at the destination on time, twelve o’clock. I got off the bus quickly for I felt that I was going to vomit. But what I ate later made me forgot all of the unhappy things. It was a sea food restaurant, so the first food is sashimi, which is differ from the traditional mullet roe. Then the follow up foods were also distinct from the foods in a banquet we usually had. For example, the king crab, the au gratin soap, small cakes for dessert, and the most impressive one, pure vintage, which is made by the bride’s father. All of them were surprised me and I kept guessing that what’s the next. What’s more, it was my first time to drink wine. I drank a sip of it and my throat was like burning on the fire. Everyone enjoyed the food and blushed due to the wine.
We went back as soon as the banquet was end. Of course I still have nothing to do but sleep, reading and watch the scenes, (actually just expressway), outside the window. But I was satisfied and there’s no hatred, impatience and boredom any more. I listened to my relatives singing the KTV, echoing or chatting with each other. “How lucky I am to born in such a nice family!” I thought. They promised that when the grapes are mature, we will hire a bus, and go there again. At that time everyone must be present, and I believe that we’ll all have wonderful memories, just like what I have now.

a lecture
Today I went to a lecture which title was “waiting for Venus.” The content is about a picture the photographer took which was named by the poet,鄭愁予,and Mr. Zheng also give him two poems. At first I didn’t consider the lecture was very interesting and in fact my main aim is to see Mr. Zheng’s true color. So when I found that the leading role is the old, grey-headed man, I was disappointed. The moderate temperature and the light are comfortable; moreover, the photos he showed was black and white, all these made me drowse. In addition to all the factors above, the very beginning of the show was a woman sitting on a table and dancing with her hands. That really confused me because what she did has nothing to do with the theme, I thought.
But later, the transparency was changed; the photos appeared before my eyes attracted my attention. They are a series of photos that he took including the scenic photo, and the nude body’s photo. I admire the photographer’s spirit for they can always get rid of all the distracting thought in their mind and view the nakedness as an artistic production. But what impressed me most are the scenic photos he took. For example, one of the pictures was a worn out room with two windows, and there is a chair in the middle of the room. It seemed simple but really touched me because the sunshine light up the dark, small room and also, the narrow place and the extensive sky out of the windows form a strong comparison. All of a sudden, the lonely room has some hopes. Even if there is an old man or woman sitting on the chairs, the scene is not as despair as it should be. The photo seems to tell us that there are always have expansive roads out of the hopelessness.
Another touching photo is the leading role of today’s lecture “waiting for Venus.” It was placed on the wall in the first floor of the college of medicine. The azure sky and the dark blue ocean were separated by the horizon. At the right of the sky and ocean are a dimly mountain and a spotlessly white wall with a red window. My mind was calm down when I saw the photo and as fall into the picture. I remember that one of my principles was: there is nothing beautiful can be recorded. Neither by words nor by images because they cannot convey the touching to the readers. Only when you go to the same place by yourself can you realize the beauty. But some people really bring us to there by the pictures. You see what he sees, and feel what he feels.
Mr. Zheng named the photo because he thought that the photo is like waiting for love. And he believed that if the Venus really comes to here, she’ll go away as quick as she can for she also knows that she will break the quiet scene. During the lecture I surprising noticed that the old photographer was quite humorous. And the woman who dancing at beginning appeared again to end the lecture was his wife. I really learn a lot of things from today, and the most important is, beauty is everywhere.
