a progress

Because the request of reading news of Freshman English, I take a look at the headline of BBC, NCC, and New Your Times. Before, I seldom read English news for I always think that I still didn’t have the ability to understand the whole story. But now, I start to believe that I, just like other, can also do it. It’s really difficult for me to feel that I can’t match up on other classmates; especially some of them are joining clubs, activities, and also have boyfriend. Furthermore, after having the dinner with my adviser, I heard many gossip that about half of my classmates have a good connection. Thus, they can go abroad whenever they want to. They are under a better surrounding because their parents are also the teachers, the professors, even the chief. They can learn English from their parents, and also guide by, ask question to their parents.

Some of their parents are the boss of a company, or the soldiers, who can afford their children’s tuition or even hire a tutor for them. I know it’s unfair for classmates because maybe some of them are also learn English on their own, or they make a lot of efforts on learning. And now it’s just the time of fruitfulness. I do not complain about my family, my parents, or my backgrounds, either. But I am disappointed. I hate that what I can do is to attribute all the great language skills of my classmates to their backgrounds. I hate that what I feel after hearing such things is only to sigh, but not urge myself that I need to work hard. I hate, hate, hate the god damn differences between the same age, same birth place Taiwan, and the same education.

Let me review, ten reading notes, two facilitate group presentation, and the project from Freshman English, two responses and two papers from Introduction to Western Literature. There are also one presentation from Rhetoric and oral training class respectively, two movies and three to four homework from Introduction to Linguistic. After hundreds of thousands of searches, googles, discussions, and preparations, do I make the progress? I don’t know. How terrible it is, to feel that I don’t know whether I make the progress or not? Sadness, frustration, depression, is not to mention. But what’s harder to afford is that my mood is just like a curve, arising when I thought that I am progressing then falling down when I know the scores I got, know the truth is that I am still far from others.

But what worse it can be? People won’t stay at the depression all the time, of course I need to brace up and perk up. So after reading three pieces of news, I decide to believe that I can do others can eventually. Maybe reading news is just the beginning, but at last it makes me want to continue my work, my job, my enthusiastic about what I loved, English. And finally, I can gain what I dream for, maybe also just like what they dream for a long time ago.

As a Hakka

Just as what I said in the last article, I am a Hakka. The truth is that, I am proud of being a Hakka. My parents are both Hakka so I was grow up in the atmosphere of Hakka’s food, the language, and the custom. These things are all my familiar things so I am eager wanting to let everyone know that Hakka cultural is beautiful and the language is also charming. My mom and my dad are all Hakka and both my grandparents home are in Meeinoog. Meeinoog is the place I know mostly besides my hometown, Kaohsiung. In recent years the most famous tourist spot is of course the huge amount of flower seas.

The flower is big with many different colors, and the height can to reach our waist. Furthermore, there are many bees flying around the flower, which means that the bees would around you when you taking the picture with the flowers! The best time to see the flower seas is in Chinese New Year, and actually there are no certain spot or place, which means that you can just drive the car in the street and you will find that there are a lot of people and cars parking at the side of the road. Then there would be sheets of flowers.

As for my favorite cuisine , it is certainly the Rice Flat Noodles. Even in Kaohsiung or Tainan I eat them very often. But, I still think that both Tainan and Kaohsiung can’t compare with Meinong’s rice flat Noodles. I don’t know the reasons maybe the way they cooked or the relish are different. Relish means that when a cuisine is ready you need to put some And I recommend you a street called “Rice Flat Noodles Street” in Meinong. It is not the name of the street; however, because there are more than twenty stores selling Rice Flat Noodles there, it got the name.

Rise is Hakka people’s staple food. They eat rice three meals a day. In addition to plain rice, they use rice to make all kinds of snacks. There are rice snacks that are available only on Chinese New Year, festivals, wedding, and funerals such as Hong Ban or Gui Ban. We add sesame, peanuts, red beans as stuffing. It’s really tasty. Even now I just type it on the computer, I’m almost slobbering.

As a Hakka, I am proud that I like being a member of this race. As the time passed, in my generation, more and more people losing the identity or even don’t care about who they are, where they belong to. But I still remain this important principle in my mind, knowing that I can’t forget that I am a Hakka or that how to speak Hakka. So now I am learning Hakka from my parents. I would also teach my friends and my roommate how to pronounce it. At the same time I learn Southern Min form them. Is it interesting? As a English major, I really hope that I can learn many new languages but also keep my own languages!

The discrimination minority

In the later Freshman English, I think we mainly focus on the discrimination minority. Like the two essays “Taiwan’s dark village sees the light” and “The Ritual of Birth.” They are both talk about the story of one of 13 official aboriginal groups in Taiwan. The first one is a piece of news, talking about the installation of electricity in the Dark Village. The Dark Village is an aboriginal settlement belongs to Amis tribe.

It’s very dark – without light and electricity and the new policy cause a debate between the young and old. I’m surprised when reading that it is the elderly people who want the electricity. Before reading the news, I thought that the young people are eager to high-tech products. But the stereotype is the opposite in this “Dark Village.” Probably I’ll never realize the feeling of living in the dark because I am born with light, but I’m still worry about the disappearance of their community spirit. People would not sit outside and share things after finishing their dinner because of the televisions and computers. They would not touch by the soft cool breeze in the night because they have air-conditioners. Then the simple village becomes the complicated, cold, but handy city.

And the other, The Ritual of Birth is about a series of rituals hold for Vava, a new-born baby in Bunun. The story was written in children’s perspective, making us more understand the meaning or the origin of some rituals. But after reading the whole story, I was stunned by the character, midwife. Because Bunun is patriarchy, women may not have as much power as men. But the midwife is as same as the elder men, also be respected by the people in the village, even grandpa need to honor her strong power. Suddenly, I feel a sense of proud being woman, even though our most important mission is seem only to give birth to a new life. I, of course, would feel unfair when the story mention some limits for women. But undeniable, to give birth to a new baby is an irreplaceable job for a women. I believe men also understand how important we are, that’s why the midwife is so respectable.

As in the first article, should electricity install to the village? In my opinion, the perfect solution is yes, but with the circumstance that we people don’t lose the original spirit of helping others and gathering together. And always remember that the natural resources are the most wonderful and irreplaceable power. But what I want to concern more is that all of us should really pay more attention to the cultural of these discrimination minorities. Otherwise, the unique, special cultural will disappear fast, just like I also want to keep Hakka cultural forever. Because I am a Hakka, I know the feeling of belonging to a light discrimination minority, well, at least not the majority. I believe no matter what aspect which other people want to access, all we want is that they can also help us to keep the interesting, meaningful, and non-replaceable cultural forever.

Another New Question

Just like what I am mention in the previous journal, I am interested in anorexia. I wonder that why people in this world will suffer from a disease which is not want to eat anything. Sometimes I even think that it is a reckless waste of grain, because so many people in the world want to eat but there is no enough food for them. Both types of people die eventually, but sarcastically, one is because of anorexia and one is starvation. And now, because of the project of Freshman English, our group has the chance to understand anorexia. We focus on the children anorexia, that is children aged before twelve. I am in charge of the news. So I found much news, being surprised that children anorexia is a totally important issue.

For example, the first news I found is titled anorexia begins at five. The case is from Eating Disorders Foundation in Australian and New Zealand on 2006. Among their patients, the youngest was a five-year-old boy. The child had been teased in preschool and was about to start kindergarten. So he believe that if he went to school he could not be fat because he would be teased worse, that’s unbelievable. The second one is happens in Taiwan. The news is from China Post on 2006 but the case is in Taiwan. A ten-year-old girl, that is only fifth grades in elementary school, is engaged in a weight-reducing competition with her classmates. Actually the girl does not look fat before she began to go on a diet. But, because of peer pressure, she ate less and less. Finally she got anorexia.

And we should even pay more attention on the causes of children anorexia. The news told us that we should not ignore children anorexia anymore because the youngest anorexic in Taiwan is 7 years old, according another news on 2009. Among the first two pieces of news, there is a same reason – peer pressure – which leads to the children anorexia. Why peer pressures also have the strong power to make an innocent child suffer from anorexia. I begin trying to recall that before I entering junior high school, the most influence people should be my parents and teachers. So the causes from family and media are reasonable. But why are peers? Why peers are so important that it can influence children refusing to eat?

In our presentation, our group is going to tell everyone what peer pressure is, why it is so important, and how to defeat peer pressure. But then I come up with another question – what causes peer pressure become so influence that it can make children suffered from anorexia? I mean, in my generation, or in any generation, peer pressure is everywhere. But it is not until recently that peer pressure can cause eating disorders. Is that because our value changes which indirectly cause the value of children, or because we do not care our parents as much as before? Anyway, there are always unsolvable questions in the reality.

Party

This Thursday is our last party, and the final comes soon after that. I’ve always nervous when I needed to go on the stage and perform some show, even if there is also someone else besides me. What’s more, the party and the composition final exam are at the same day, which made me running out of time to prepare for the party’s show. Our group is going to perform a talk show, and I am the host. But I didn’t even have the time to memorize the line until yesterday! Nevertheless, our rehearsal was full of fun! We six people laughed during the rehearsal, and finally I decide to just let it be and improvise.

At first, the atmosphere is a little bit not so high because the first group performed a magic show. But their shows are full of flaws and holes. Later we went to change our costume, and it’s our time to show! I was sitting on the chair, introducing myself at first “Hello everyone, this is Nicky’s talk show. Today we also continue the series of program – celebrity’s marriage. We invite a happy couple to share their romance. Let’s welcome Bangelina – Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie” Then April and Lisa danced to the front. When I chatted with them, Jennifer Aniston rushed to the stage and shouted with abuse toward Angelina, that is Andrea! Just like what you though, the two women were fighting with each other for Brad Pitt.

At the same time, Brad Pitt called his best friend, a half of a thousand, Five Hundred, for help. After Five Hundred (that is Kate) and Brad Pitt separate the two crazy women, I said “Calm down everyone. Since you are both charming and attractive, why not just take some small test and so we can find out who’s the winner for Brad Pitt? Actually, our producer just comes up with some game for you.” And then I invite the numerologist Vivian (Arwen) to be the umpire. And the first game is – boxing. It’s really excited, isn’t it? The first winner is Angelina. But what I like most is the second game, which is to ask questions and see who know Brad Pitt most! The first question is – who is Brad Pitt’s favorite star? We design that the answer should be “of course, me!” Ha it’s really fun!

Finally is the last game, which is to test their body flexible. Angelina was fifty centimeter while Jennifer was only five! So it is obvious that Angelina and Brad made a perfect couple. Ha’ ha it’s all our performance. Is it cool and funny? At the end of the party, Nicole brought in a big, big Teddy bear as a gift to Christina. And we took picture together, of course with the Teddy bear. Christina encouraged us to practice continuously, and somehow I felt a little sad… Our happy oral training class is end, and no longer will have. I really like Christina, but besides oral training class, she is not as humor as in oral class! All of a sudden I thought I lose a perfect professor. But think on the other side, how lucky I am to have a perfect professor at the fresh year of a college life?
